 What inspired you to paint fantasy art and how long have you been painting?
"As a teenager and a preteen, I was always the outsider, the misfit. No one else I knew spent afternoons sitting in the trees talking to the little wild animals, or looking for faeries. I learned to hide that part of myself from most people, but that was when I started drawing, and later painting. I think it was a way for me to express that part of my life without fear of rejection."
Do you have any favorite Artists?
"Oh yes! Brian Froud is my all time favorite! He is just so wonderful, and such a source of inspiration to me as far as continuing to pursue my art. I also love Amy Brown, Jessica Galbreth, and James C. Christensen, among others."
How do you come up with the ideas for your paintings?
"Everything is capable of giving me an idea for a painting. If it gives me an emotional rush, I find myself thinking about it a lot, and a painting comes from it. It could be a movie, a dream I had, another painting, a story, or a part of my life that needs to be exorcised in some way, as with my painting, Nightmare. The horse paintings I do are almost exclusively inspired by my own horse, Pagan, or one of my other horses." |
 Do you have any particular books that you like or read often?
"I will read anything and everything. I cannot get enough of books. If you put it in front of me, I read it, even junk mail! But, of course, when I have a choice, I tend to read fantasy novels, though not usually the sword and sorcery type. I love fantasy novels where the heroine is, for instance, a modern woman who somehow gets caught up in historical events, like Barbra Erskine's books, or the Dragonfly in Amber series by Diana Gabaldon. I also love Mary Stewart, and Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mist of Avalon and The Forest House. I'll read anything by Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman, or Alice Hoffman. Oh, and you gotta love Stephen King, his mind is one twisted place." |

What types of paint do you use in your paintings?
"I use Acrylic paints. I love their versatility. They dry much quicker than an oil paint, but have a thicker texture than a watercolor. You can dilute them down to a watercolor consistency though, and they blend well."
Where do you see yourself 20 years from now as an Artist?
"I haven't really thought of this before, but I would like to have improved greatly by then, as I believe I have improved since I first started painting 20 years ago!"
Who do you want to reach with your paintings or do you paint for a particular crowd?
"I really don't paint for any particular crowd. I paint for myself, and hope to heaven that someone else likes it! So far, it's a formula that has worked."
 And lastly, could you tell us a bit about yourself outside of your art?
"I grew up in Colorado, on a small non-working ranch, outside of a very small town. I left the ranch at 17 , and was discovered by a modeling agent and sent to France. I worked for several years as a model, and then an actress. During this time, I was married for 8 yrs to a musician, and we had a son. After our divorce, I moved to Los Angeles, where I still live with my second husband (as of March 17, 2001), my son, who is now 16 (as of 2006), and my new daughter who was born in November, 2005, and anywhere from 10 to 20 animals. I have horses and dogs and one funny tutle named Tulip and usually a few wild rahab animals around. Besides my artwork, I own an all natural bath and body products company that I started called Medieval. I'm a busy girl!" |
